Year 4 Visit to the OpenZone – Podcasting

12th February 2025 By carolinekennedy

Year 4 spent a fantastic morning at OpenZone at The Word where they enjoyed a Podcasting workshop learning how to use the GarageBand app.

The children have been learning how to create newspaper reports based on an alternative account of the traditional tale ‘The Three Little Pigs’.  They watched a video as stimulus which sparked their imagination and enthusiasm for the topic.  Following on from the video, the children worked in pairs to prepare a script to use in a podcast, discussing the events of the video in an interview scenario.

During the workshop, the children learnt how to record audio, edit the audio file, add music and sound, fade in and out, and upload their files.

We will further refine these files and develop our podcasting skills using GarageBand over the coming weeks.

Reception Number Day 2025

7th February 2025 By katiedixon

Today we took part in the NSPCC’S Number Day 2025! We came to school dressed in numbers and played lots of number games with our friends. The money we have raised will help to support vital NSPCC services like Speak out Stay Safe, which visits primary schools across the UK to teach children about the dangers of abuse and what they can do if they need help.

Reception Visit Church

6th February 2025 By katiedixon

This afternoon the children visited Father Bill to find out all about celebrations that take place in a church. The children listened carefully to Father Bill explain how different parts/artefacts in church are used during these celebrations. The children then got the opportunity to look around the church themselves, ticking on their ‘I Spy’ sheets when they found the; font, pews, church door, lectern, alter, hymn books, candle and cross.

Year 2 Electiricity

5th February 2025 By Samantha McHugh

After an exciting journey exploring the world of electricity, the children in Year 2  have successfully completed their Science topic with a hands-on, practical lesson in building simple circuits!

Throughout this topic, the class has learned all about how electricity powers our everyday devices. They discovered the key components of a circuit—batteries, wires, and bulbs—and explored how electricity flows through them. This final lesson allowed the students to put their knowledge into action by creating their own circuits!

Each student had the chance to connect wires to batteries and lightbulbs, making sure to form a complete circuit to get the lights shining.   The lesson not only helped solidify their understanding of how electricity works but also encouraged teamwork and problem-solving skills. There were plenty of “Eureka!” moments as the student figured out how to make the circuits work, and they were thrilled when their circuits lit up or made noise.

Year 1 @ The Open Zone

4th February 2025 By kmcvittie

Our Year 1 children had an amazing time at the Open Zone, where they became digital animators for the morning! Using iPads, they explored creative storytelling through the ChatterPix and Puppet Pals apps.

The children brought characters to life by adding images, toys, and even themselves into their mini videos. They loved recording their own voices, making their characters talk, and watching their animations come to life! This hands-on experience helped them develop important digital skills while having lots of fun.

It was wonderful to see their creativity shine as they worked together to produce fantastic short animations. A big thank you to the staff at Open Zone for an inspiring session!

The children in Year 6 attended the Open-Zone where they completed work on ‘tinkercad’ to design a 3D Ice Palace.

The children could really show off their creative side and showed how confident they were using the design software.

The children have their log-ins and can finish their designs online at home.

We have set up a little competition and the 3 winners will have their designs printed out on the 3D printer.

Can’t wait to see their final designs!

Year 2 Celebration of the Word

31st January 2025 By Samantha McHugh

Year 2 has had an exciting and meaningful exploration of the different books used in church and in everyday life as part of our current RE topic, Books. The children discovered the significance of these books in our faith and how they help us grow in our understanding of God’s word.

The highlight of their learning was their excellent retelling of the story of Jesus’ Baptism. With great enthusiasm and confidence, the children shared this important moment in the life of Jesus, projecting their voices excellently and bringing the story to life for everyone to enjoy.

Mrs. McHugh is incredibly proud of the children for their hard work, dedication, and effort. Their ability to recall and share the story with such clarity and passion is a testament to their deep engagement with the topic.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support the children and make this event even more special. Your presence meant a lot to the children and added to the joy of the celebration.

As a well-deserved treat for their hard work, the children enjoyed some biscuits back in class, sharing their excitement and reflecting on the celebration together.
