Y5 History Workshop

8th October 2024 By lusher

Year 5 recently enjoyed a wonderful history workshop with Richard (‘That History Bloke’).

We explored the lives of Anglo Saxon monks which is part of our History topic this term. Richard really brought the past to life as he shared many aspects of Anglo Saxon times with us. Just as Richard intended, we learned lots and we had lots of fun!

Here is a selection of photos of the children enjoying their brilliant afternoon:

Y1 Visit to ‘The Word’ Library – National Green Library Week

8th October 2024 By kmcvittie

Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic trip to ‘The Word’ library as part of National Green Library Week. The event was designed to highlight the importance of sustainability and encourage children to explore books in a creative way.

During our visit, the children took part in a fun hands-on activity, making cardboard trees to celebrate the environment. They worked together to craft beautiful trees using recycled materials, which really helped to bring out their artistic skills. It was a wonderful opportunity to reinforce the message of looking after our planet while letting their creativity shine.

After the tree-making activity, the children had the chance to explore the library and select a book to bring back to school. Their excitement in choosing their own books was a joy to see, and they were eager to begin reading them in class. These books will be part of our classroom reading area for the children to enjoy together, helping to foster their love for reading.

A big thank you to ‘The Word’ library for hosting such an enjoyable event!

Year 4 Greek Visitor

3rd October 2024 By carolinekennedy

Year 4 Ancient Greek Workshop from ‘That History Bloke.’

In History, the children in Year 4 are learning about the ‘Ancient Greeks’.

This week, they enjoyed a very interesting and informative visit from Richard, ‘That History Bloke’.

They explored:

  • Greek Gods
  • Spartan, Athenian, Corinthian and Ancient Greek people
  • Life in Ancient Greece
  • Greek artefacts
  • Greek instruments, games and toys
  • Greek words
  • Writing the Greek alphabet using ink and a stylus

Richard also serenaded the class with his lyre and panpipes and the children dressed up in the regalia of a Hoplite soldier.

It was a fantastic experience and Richard brought the topic to life with his amazing knowledge and enthusiasm.

Y3 Mini-Archaeologists!

3rd October 2024 By bmcvittie

Our Y3 mini-archaeologists enjoyed a very interesting and fun Stone-Bronze Age event today!

We learned about the chronology of Prehistory and analysed an exciting range of ancient artefacts. Y3 constructed a skeleton and investigated what we could deduce from the bones. Our young historians also used clay to mould some creative Bronze Age pottery. Thank you to Paddy from Durham University for leading a brilliant day!

Last week, Year 5 had the fantastic opportunity to work with some of the players from Newcastle Eagles. They took part in the wonderful Hoops 4 Health roadshow. The afternoon concentrated on health messages such as mental and social wellbeing, how to stay fit and look after the heart and lungs, healthy eating including portion size and a balanced diet. Plus, there was the opportunity to play some basketball. Year 5  worked very hard and had a brilliant afternoon. Here are some photos of what we got up to:

Platinum Sport & PE Award for St. Bede’s!

21st September 2024 By bmcvittie

We are delighted to announce that we have retained our School Games Platinum Mark status. The School Games Committee has awarded St. Bede’s the accolade for “consistently high commitment to school sport and development of PE”.

Uniquely, we were the first South Tyneside school to achieve the Platinum status in 2018 and our dedication and commitment to wide participation in school sport has seen us maintain this prestigious status for the past 6 years! We are still one of only a small number of schools in the area who have ever reached Platinum, while we are by far the longest standing recipient of the award.

Our school provides children with a wide range of sports provision in both curriculum time and after school. This includes taking part in large numbers at inter-school competitions, by entering multiple teams so boys and girls of all abilities can be involved.

Meanwhile, this term we look forward to children in the Juniors, Infants and Early Years attending local sport festivals. We are determined to keep striving to improve opportunities for everyone.

Thank you to everyone who has supported PE and school sport at St. Bede’s. Sport has the ability to enhance pupil’s discipline, character, communication, resilience and team work skills, which provide the tools to success in all subject areas and future life.

Everyone at St. Bede’s should be proud of this award, as everyone has played their part. Lunch time supervisors keenly encourage activity, while parents keep their children moving outside of school and get them involved in local community clubs. But most importantly, this award is recognition for our fantastic children who seek to lead healthy lives and enthusiastically get involved in school sport.
