Y3 Celebrating Chinese New Year & National Story Telling Week at the Word!
The Y3 children had a great morning at the Word celebrating both Chinese New Year & National Story Telling Week. Firstly, the children enjoyed being read David Walliams’ brilliant story, ‘There’s a Snake in my School.’ Afterwards, they used their creative skills to design and make wonderful Chinese lanterns. Finally, the children changed their books, before eagerly starting the first few pages of their exciting new stories.
Grand Final Basketball Qualifiers – Vertu Motors Arena Newcastle!
Today our basketball squad enjoyed the prestigious Hoops4Health Tournament at the Vertu Motors Arena, the home of the Newcastle Eagles. Amazingly, three of our teams reached the semi-finals! One of our teams successfully qualified for the District Grand Finals event ( date TBC) which will take place on the same night as an Eagles match with a capacity crowd watching on as St. Bede’s take to the court!
I was very proud of the determination, skills and teamship the children displayed, which took them all deep into the competition. It was wonderful watching all of our teams cheering for one another on the different pitches.
In preparation, all of the children had trained keenly over the winter months at lunchtimes. The children’s training efforts really showed today as they performed superbly at a great venue alongside their friends. Meanwhile, throughout the day it was lovely to see our teams display good sportsmanship by shaking hands with their opponents after games.
Thank you to our brilliant parent helpers who enabled us to have so many teams involved in the event. Finally, thank you to all of the children for your positive attitude and relentless efforts today, which carried you all a long way.
Meanwhile our Basketball journey will continue together, as we begin to prepare for the Grand Finals night- Let’s Go St Bede’s Let’s Go!
County Final – Sportshall Athletics 2025!
The St. Bede’s Sportshall Athletics team superbly represented South Tyneside today in a high-level County Final. The children gave their all in a variety of running, jumping and throwing activities and did their school and Borough proud!
The children only returned to school this week, but have shown brilliant dedication to immediately launch themselves straight into training. There were many fantastic performances today, which saw lots of our children produce personal bests in front of big crowds!
The County final today concludes an exciting Sportshall season, where I have been delighted with how everyone has supported each other in both training and competitions! Thank you also to our fantastic parent helpers today, who supported the children so positively throughout.
Y3 Skipping Into Christmas!!

The children had a great time, while enjoying lots of festive, Christmas songs. Thank you to our wonderful helpers for supporting the children throughout the morning and swinging plenty of skipping ropes!
Year 3 Advent Drama- Preparing For the Visit of Jesus!
After reading scripture from the prophet Isaiah, Year 3 have been working in drama groups to demonstrate how we should behave during Advent, as we prepare for Christmas. We explored and depicted giving alms to the homeless, looking after the elderly, praying regularly to talk to God, showing love in our friendship groups and showing understanding with our friends. All of the children collaborated and showed excellent oracy skills with their friends.
Y3 History Debate – When was the Greatest Age in Prehistory to live – Stone, Bronze or Iron?
The young historians in Y3 took part in an oracy session, where they took sides and respectfully debated the advantages and disadvantages of living in each period in Prehistory ( considering the changes that had occurred). They came up with many logical arguments, that they bravely stood up to articulate with confidence to the group. They listened, understood and then responded to the view of their fellow historians.
It proved to be a great session, where the children not only thought like historians, but also spoke like ones too. They then went on to write a response to the question with the disciplinary knowledge they had developed from the debating lesson.
Sportshall Athletics Silver Success!
The Sportshall Athletics squad achieved a brilliant team silver in the District Competition today!
Our young athletes have shown great dedication to train for the event, while everyone performed superbly contributing to our team. There were many fantastic performances, which saw lots of our children achieving personal bests!
I was so proud of how everyone supported each other; congratulations to everyone in our team! Thank you also to our fantastic parent helpers today, who supported the children so well throughout.
Y3 Festive Library Visit!
Y3 enjoyed a special festive visit to the Word where they were read some exciting Christmas stories. The children enjoyed changing their library books, seeing the magical Christmas decorations and finally reading their books back at school.
The children were perfectly behaved on our visit and are so enthusiastic to ‘make every day a reading day.’
Y3- Our Young Scientists!
Our young scientists in Y3 have been investigating how much fat various liquids and foods contain. They pressed each item against plain paper and once it had dried looked for translucent stains when the paper was held up to the light.
They discovered, like many predicted that foods like cake and margarine left greasy stains due to the fat content. The children did really well working together and made sure they conducted fair tests.
