In aid of Anti-Bullying Week the children came into school today wearing a pair of odd socks. It’s been a great opportunity to celebrate what makes us unique and individual.
Children in Need 2021
The children have had a fabulous day raising money for Children in Need. We wore Pudsey ears to school and took part in the Annual Duck Race. I’m thrilled to say that we have raised a whopping £205.00 so far! Well done to all of the children – your kind donations will make a huge difference to children’s lives around the UK.
Y3’s ICT Visit to The Open Zone!
Y3 enjoyed a day of creating algorithms, programming and de-bugging at The Open Zone. The children worked collaboratively to problem solve using materials such as Lego. The children gave an excellent account of themselves and were a credit to the school.
Thank you to the Y3 parents who managed to drop off and collect their children from the venue, which enabled the visit to take place.
KeyProject
The Mini Vinnies have been collecting donations for the South Shields KeyProject and were overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of St Bede’s children and their families.
A huge thank you to everyone for your wonderful donations! These will make a huge difference to a lot of people!
Year 5’s Anglo-Saxon Settlement
In History, Year 5 have been studying the Anglo-Saxons. As part of our DT project, the children made their own Anglo-Saxon houses. They experimented with frame structures and how to reinforce their frames to make them stronger. After designing their houses and surrounding landscapes, the children made their designs come to life this week with Mrs McDonald and Mr Maratty. Their attention to detail was very impressive! Once finished, we took our creations outside to make our own settlement.

Go Green for CAFOD
The Year 6 Mini Vinnies excelled themselves with their first fundraiser of the school year – the Go Green for CAFOD Bake Sale. The Year 6 children produced some delicious cakes, cup cakes, tray bakes and chocolate dipped apples for everyone to enjoy. Supporting them with hungry enthusiasm and generous donations, the rest of the school tucked into the tasty treats.
A huge thank you to everyone for making the Bake Sale such a huge success – we had fun and raised £151.36 for CAFOD! Amazing!!
Year 6 Robinwood Residential
Year 6 had an amazing few days in Alston. We pushed ourselves to try each and every activity even though we may have felt nervous or unsure. We were very well behaved and a credit our school!
Y1 @ The Open Zone
Year 1 went to the Open Zone @ The Word to learn more about coding, algorithms and debugging. The used the the Bluebots to create a set of simple instructions, as well as the Code-a-Pillar. The then moved onto the Sphero’s, which were much harder to control.
Year 5 STEMfest workshop
As part of our ‘Space’ topic, Year 5 participated in STEMfest In Space!
We joined the virtual Rocking Robots & Rovers pop-up workshop, beamed live into our classroom from the National Space Centre. Year 5 had to imagine they were astronauts and could take our school to Mars! After listening to a presentation by solar scientist, Dr Helen Mason and space artist, Helen Schell, they designed their own robot or rover.
The children had to consider what technology their invention would need and how the Sun’s energy could power their machine. We had lots of very creative ideas!
We were also very lucky and some of our pupils’ space questions were chosen to be answered by Dr Mason during the call. We may just have some future astronauts amongst us!
Year 1 at Gibside
Year 1 enjoyed an autumnal day at Gibside, as part of their science topic, ‘Seasonal Change’. The children looked for signs that autumn was here and collected leaves, acorns and conkers to take back to class. They have also been learning about animals that hibernate, so decided to make some hedgehog homes. The children used materials around them to create a warm, waterproof shelter for them.
Although it rained most of the day, year 1 made the most of it and enjoyed a treat at the playpark for their amazing efforts.
