Rio Carnival
To celebrate the end of our ‘Around the World’ topic we had our very own Brazilian Carnival! The children designed and made head-dresses, streamers and decorations and enjoyed dancing to samba music in their colourful clothes. They even got the chance to play on some samba drums. It was a fantastic afternoon enjoyed by all!
Year 2’s Egg Box Dragons
After finishing our Literacy topic based on the story ‘Egg Box Dragon’, Year 2 have been designing and creating their own Egg Box Dragons. We have had so much fun and even had a little dragon puppet show!
Here are their creations:
Year 4 Limerick Writing
In English, the children have been learning the features of and writing a range of poems including: haiku poems and cinquain poems.
Today the children learnt about the features of limericks and had a go at writing their own.
They worked in pairs and used an online rhyming dictionary on the i’pads to help them find rhyming words then had good fun writing their own limerick poems.
There was lots of laughter in the class as the children worked….A great, fun lesson!
Here are a few of their poems:
There was a small child named Bea
Who liked to play ball in the sea
She played with the cat
She’d jump, run and splat
And she always got things for free!
There once was a boy names Jeff
Who liked to play chess with the chef
Who liked to eat all the food
When he was in a good mood
But then he sadly turned deaf!
There was once a Minion called Bob
Who really cared about his job
He frightened his fish
That lived in a dish
Then ran and turned into a blob!
There was a boy names Mark
Who liked to be in the dark
He liked to play ball
and liked to play with all
with a friend named Lark.
Y3 Author Visit!
Y3 enjoyed a visit from local author Yvonne Carlin Page today. The talented writer of Lily Windy and the Witch told the children about her inspiring journey to become an author. The children enjoyed hearing more about their favourite characters from her books, which they are currently enjoying during our story time.
We then played some fun literary games, where children won some fantastic prizes and stickers. Y3 also had the opportunity to receive a signed copy of one of Yvonne’s books. Meanwhile, it was lovely to hear some of the children speaking of wanting to emulate Yvonne and become a writer one day themselves. Y3 are already looking forward to their next writing lesson!
Safer Internet Day Years 4 and 5
As part of Safer Internet Day, the children in Years 4 and 5 discussed the importance of not sharing personal information online and what is acceptable behaviour when gaming online.
The children discussed what they would do in a range of ‘scenarios’ when gaming online. The children had some very sensible and mature answers.
The children worked through a Safer Internet Day booklet and even
enjoyed completing a word search and crossword.
Children’s Mental Health Week Year’s 4 and 5
As part of Children’s Mental Health Week (7th-13th February), Children from Years 4 and 5 took part in some activities linked to the Mental Health Week theme of ‘Growing Together’.
Firstly we enjoyed watching a virtual assembly which introduced ‘support balloons’ and ‘reaching for the stars’.
The children then designed their own ‘support balloons’ by considering the people in their lives that help them to grow. We discussed the importance of recognising the people we can turn to when we need ‘lifting up.’
They also created their star which set a goal they wanted to reach. They listened to S Club 7’s ‘Reach for the Stars’ for inspiration! The children set an emotional goal they would like to achieve or overcome then they thought about the ‘steps’ they would take to reach their goal. They wrote their ‘steps to success’ on the rungs of a ladder.
The children’s completed work will be used to create a bright, colourful display in school.
Hoops4Health Basketball Success!
Four squads of children had a great day at the Eagles Community Arena in Newcastle. Their dedication to training in recent weeks certainly showed, as they all put in fantastic team performances. Everyone encouraged their friends, while two of our teams reached the Play-Off Finals. Our A team prevailed, and they will now go on to the District Finals to be played on the evening of 4th March back in Newcastle.
The overriding feeling of the day was immense pride, to see the children return to competitive sport and show wonderful skill, character and camaraderie. Thank you very much to all of the parents who helped on the day.
Children’s Mental Health Week – Year 5
As part of Children’s Mental Health Week (7th-13th February), Year 5 designed their own ‘support balloons’ by considering the people in their lives that help them to grow. Here are a few examples of the children’s work. We discussed the importance of recognising the people we can turn to when we need ‘lifting up.’
Safer Internet Day in Reception
As part of ‘Safer Internet Day’ the children have been learning about how to use the Internet safely in a fun way with Buddy the Dog’s Internet Safety Story. The story specifically focuses on the safe use of tablets and smartphones. In the story, Ben is given a new tablet and throughout he asks questions to Buddy the dog about how to use his tablet safely. Asking these questions to your children will help to initiate discussions about key online safety issues, such as talking to strangers online. The story also contains a catchy song to help to reinforce key Internet safety messages!
