Year 5 trip to The Word

4th April 2022 By lusher

Year 5 visited the Open Zone at The Word to take part in some programming activities including:

Selection in Physical Computing – Lego Wedo 2

Designing and running a light show using LED display – Sphero

I have to say the children worked fantastically well and their behaviour was superb. Their programming and building skills resulted in some brilliant work with robotics. It’s clear to see we have some keen Lego fans in class too!

Click the first image to see a short video of the children in action and I have added some photos of the day below.

Year 5 Star Bakers

4th April 2022 By lusher

In DT this half term, the children in Year 5 have been studying the process of making bread. They designed their own recipe with their own flavour combinations. Last week we saw their designs come to life as they baked, tested and evaluated them. The children worked so well and were very happy with the results of their hard work! Here are some photos of our bakers in action.

Year 5’s Battle Cry Speeches

6th March 2022 By lusher

During our work on Beowulf, Year 5 wrote some persuasive speeches to try and encourage their fellow villagers to follow them into battle. The children really enjoyed using the green screen to bring their speeches to life. They all did extremely well and we all enjoyed watching them back on the big screen together. Here are some examples of the pupils’ performances.

Showcasing our ‘Shackleton’ work: Year 5

3rd March 2022 By lusher

Year 5 have recently completed a Literacy unit focusing on Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill. We really enjoyed the adventure story of the book and some of us couldn’t believe it was based on real events!

The children have produced a range of lovely work including some ice-inspired poetry and writing in role as a crew member, culminating in a biography of Shackleton at the end of the topic.

Here is a video showcasing some of their hard work. (Click the image below)

Well done, as always, Year 5!

As part of Safer Internet Day, the children in Years 4 and 5 discussed the importance of not sharing personal information online and what is acceptable behaviour when gaming online.

The children worked through a Safer Internet Day booklet and even enjoyed completing a word search and crossword.

Children’s Mental Health Week Year’s 4 and 5

11th February 2022 By vickidavis

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week (7th-13th February), Children from Years 4 and 5  took part in some activities linked to the Mental Health Week theme of ‘Growing Together’.

Firstly we enjoyed watching a virtual assembly which introduced ‘support balloons’ and ‘reaching for the stars’.

The children then designed their own ‘support balloons’ by considering the people in their lives that help them to grow. We discussed the importance of recognising the people we can turn to when we need  ‘lifting up.’

They also created their star which set a goal they wanted to reach. They listened to S Club 7’s ‘Reach for the Stars’ for inspiration! The children set an emotional goal they would like to achieve or overcome then they thought about the ‘steps’ they would take to reach their goal. They wrote their ‘steps to success’ on the rungs of a ladder.

The children’s completed work will be used to create a bright, colourful display in school.
