Year 1 had a wonderful time celebrating National Poetry Day! We started by listening to Michael Rosen’s funny poem Down Behind the Dustbin and enjoyed spotting its repeated structure. The children then had lots of fun joining in with Michael Rosen’s lively performance of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.
To finish our poetry celebrations, we shared a beautiful poem from our new daily poetry book I Am the Seed that Grew the Tree.

Reception had a wonderful time celebrating National Poetry Day this week! As part of our learning about our bodies, we listened to the poem, “We Can” by Michael Rosen.
The children were captivated by the rhythm and movement in the poem, which encouraged us to think about all the amazing things our bodies can do — from jumping and stretching to clapping and dancing! We joined in with actions, explored new words, and celebrated how unique and capable we all are.
Well done, Reception — you certainly showed us what you can do!
Yesterday, our Year 2 children had a fantastic time taking part in a First Aid workshop! They learned lots of useful and interesting information, including how to give CPR and the importance of items like bandages, gloves, and wipes when helping someone in need.
The children were enthusiastic and engaged throughout, and it was wonderful to see them developing such valuable life skills in a fun and interactive way.
Well done, Year 2!

Today, our Year 5 pupils took part in an exciting and hands-on First Aid workshop! They explored the contents of a first aid bag, learned how to check their pulse, and were introduced to the DRABC steps (a method for assessing emergency situations).
The highlight of the session was practising CPR on training dummies and learning how to use a defibrillator safely and effectively.
Well done, Year 5!

This week, children across Years 1 to 6 took part in exciting and educational First Aid workshops, designed to introduce them to essential lifesaving skills in a fun and age-appropriate way.
Throughout the sessions, pupils explored what they might find in a first aid kit, learning how each item can help in an emergency. They also discovered how to check for a pulse, and were introduced to the basics of CPR.
One of the highlights was learning how to place someone into the recovery position, a vital skill that helps keep an unconscious person safe while waiting for help to arrive. Children worked in pairs and small groups to practice the steps, building confidence and teamwork.
The workshops were hands-on, engaging, and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity as they learned how they could help others in a real emergency.

Year 3 enjoyed a wonderful visit to our local library this morning. The children enjoyed an interesting story, before designing a creative card connected to the exciting tale. Afterwards, the children keenly browsed the array of books before selecting a favourite they could read back at school. All of the children enjoyed their visit and showed lots of respect to the staff and other library users. Well done Year 3 – let’s make every day a reading day.

Year 5 recently enjoyed a wonderful history workshop with Richard (‘That History Bloke’).
We explored the lives of Anglo Saxon monks and discovered how important they were. Richard really brought the past to life as he shared many aspects of Anglo Saxon times with us. The pupils loved learning sign language that was use by Anglo Saxon monks and handling different artefacts. Just as Richard intended, we learned lots and we had lots of fun!
Here is a selection of photos of the children enjoying their brilliant afternoon:

Our Y3 mini-archaeologists enjoyed an interesting Stone-Bronze Age day at the Museum of Archaeology in Durham! We learned about the chronology of Prehistory and analysed an exciting range of ancient artefacts. The children completed an exciting gallery trail and also considered what we could deduce from the bones of a skeleton. Y3 conducted themselves superbly throughout the visit and even took in some of the sites of a picturesque Durham. Thank you also to our great parent helpers!

A New Opportunity for Year 5: Mini Police at St Bede’s
We were excited to welcome Darren and Steven from Northumbria Police to our school last week to introduce the Mini Police scheme to our Year 5 pupils.
This fantastic initiative offers a fun and interactive volunteering opportunity for children aged 9–10. Through engaging activities and positive interaction with local police officers, pupils will learn about citizenship, community responsibility, and the role of the police in keeping us safe.
The scheme aims to:
Ten pupils will be selected to join the Mini Police team this year. If your child is interested, they need to write a short letter explaining why they would like to take part and what they hope to gain from the experience. We will spend some time working on this together in class so anything else completed at home is a bonus!
We’re looking forward to seeing our pupils grow as confident, responsible citizens through this exciting opportunity.
