As part of our ‘Minibeast’ topic we have been learning all about worms! Mrs Tutty very kindly provided lots of worms and compost so that we could build our very own wormery. The children helped to create layers of compost and sand and then picked up the worms and placed them very gently into the wormery.

Year 5’s Battle Cry Speeches
During our work on Beowulf, Year 5 wrote some persuasive speeches to try and encourage their fellow villagers to follow them into battle. The children really enjoyed using the green screen to bring their speeches to life. They all did extremely well and we all enjoyed watching them back on the big screen together. Here are some examples of the pupils’ performances.

District Basketball Champions 2022!
On Friday night our talented basketballers became South Tyneside Champions at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle. The players showed not only skill, but a lot of courage to perform magnificently in front of a capacity three thousand crowd!
In a round robin format we qualified for the final in first place, after convincing victories against Biddick Hall and Stanhope. However, the final against Stanhope became a closer and dramatic encounter.
We created several opportunities in the first half, but saw several shots bounce away off the rim of the basket. Stanhope then applied their own pressure and took the lead with an excellent long range shot.
However, we showed great character after conceding to force an equaliser through Mark. Neither side could score a winner, so the game had to be decided by penalties. Sharp shooter Maisie became the St. Bede’s match winner, as all her practice paid off with the winning free throw!
I was extremely proud of our children after watching them develop as a team in training, where they have shown so much dedication. It was also wonderful to see the great family, teacher and wider school community support from South Shields, which inspired the children on a glorious night’s basketball!
Year 1 World Book Day
Year one celebrated World Book Day with a range of traditional tales activities. The children retold and illustrated their own books, as well as decorate gingerbread people and build new homes for the Three Little Pigs.
Mental Health Week 2022

Bugs ‘n’ Stuff Workshop
To start off our minibeast topic, reception have had some very exciting visitors… Guy from Bugs ‘n’ Stuff came into our class and brought with him some MEGA-BEASTS for the children to look at, hear facts about and even touch and hold! We had the chance to touch a snake, a skink, a tarantula, a stick insect, a cockroach and a millipede. We even got to look very closely at a scorpion and some desert beetles. The children (and adults) were so brave and thoroughly enjoyed the workshop!
Showcasing our ‘Shackleton’ work: Year 5
Year 5 have recently completed a Literacy unit focusing on Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill. We really enjoyed the adventure story of the book and some of us couldn’t believe it was based on real events!
The children have produced a range of lovely work including some ice-inspired poetry and writing in role as a crew member, culminating in a biography of Shackleton at the end of the topic.
Here is a video showcasing some of their hard work. (Click the image below)
Well done, as always, Year 5!
Our PTA needs you!
We’d love to hear from keen volunteers, please see our letter below.
Rio Carnival
To celebrate the end of our ‘Around the World’ topic we had our very own Brazilian Carnival! The children designed and made head-dresses, streamers and decorations and enjoyed dancing to samba music in their colourful clothes. They even got the chance to play on some samba drums. It was a fantastic afternoon enjoyed by all!
