Y3 Egyptologists @ Oriental Museum Durham!

12th March 2025 By bmcvittie

Our Y3 Egyptologists enjoyed an inspiring visit to the Oriental Museum in Durham. Firstly, the children used their archaeological skills to interpret the use of a variety of interesting artefacts recovered from Ancient Egypt. We enjoyed an adventurous and informative gallery trail, where pupils even used the Rosetta Stone to interpret hieroglyphics.  Another highlight, was seeing a contemporary mummified Egyptian body, which had been perfectly prepared for the afterlife. Meanwhile, the children creatively performed a dramatic weighing of the heart ceremony, where they demonstrated their brilliant role play skills! We had a wonderful day and this was a brilliant launch to our new History unit!

Year 4 visit Fr Bill in church

10th March 2025 By carolinekennedy

Year 4 has been learning about the celebration of Mass as part of the Eucharist topic.  We visited Fr Bill in church who took us into the chapel to explain in more detail the parts of the Mass and what happens at each stage of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Fr Bill showed the children some of the books used throughout the Liturgy of the Word and the sacred vessels used in the Liturgy of the Eucharist.  They were even allowed to taste the unconsecrated host.

The children were very knowledgeable and asked lots of good questions.

Tenpin Bowling District Champions 2025!

10th March 2025 By bmcvittie

The St. Bede’s Tenpin bowling team were in top form at the Riverside in Sunderland today, as they bowled over the opposition to become District Champions! Fifteen teams represented their schools in the finals, but it was the St. Bede’s team who proved to be the most consistent. Amazingly,  four of our squad made the Panathlon 100 points club and collected additional awards! The children had a wonderful time with their friends and showed of a lot of ability and concentration to take the overall title. Well played everyone, I was really proud of you all!

Y1/2 District Gymnastics Finals 2025!

18th February 2025 By bmcvittie

Our Y1/2 Gymnastics squad had a great day at the District finals at the Urban Factory. The A team came a highly creditable 5th in a remarkably tight competition containing 21 teams; where the top five teams were separated by just 0.4 of a point!

I was very proud of the children who trained superbly for the event and then showed great courage and composure to perform so well in front of the four judges.

It was wonderful to see the team spirit among our children as they really supported each other. Meanwhile, all of our pupils enjoyed exploring a variety of gymnastic and parkour activities at the event.

Thank you to our fantastic parent helpers who really encouraged our children today. Thank you also to the parents who practised the routine with their children at home – they all did us so proud today!

Mrs Brown visits Year 4

13th February 2025 By carolinekennedy

Year 4 invited Mrs Brown, a member of the parish and former dinner lady of St Bede’s, to come and talk to them about the role of the laity in St Bede’s parish.

Mrs Brown talked to the children about what she does in church and the role of the laity in the parish.  She also gave the children a Mass sheet and talked them through the various roles that parishioners undertake throughout the Mass.

Mrs Brown spoke to the children about the various roles within the parish.  These include:

  • Sacristans – People who get the altar ready for Mass.
  • Welcomers – Someone who greets people at the door of the church.
  • Altar servers (there are 2 servers who carry the candles and 1 who carries the crucifix).
  • Readers – the main reader (who processes in with the priest and altar servers). The 1st person reads the First reading and psalm and the 2nd persons reads the Second reading and the Bidding Prayers.
  • Offertory – parishioners who take the gifts of bread and wine to the priest.
  • Parishioners who do the collection during the Offertory – money raised goes towards raising money for the church.
  • Eucharistic Ministers – who share the body and blood of Christ with the congregation.
  • Catechists – People who help children and young people prepare for their First Holy Communion and Confirmation.
  • Stewards – show people where to sit.
  • Choir and Organist
  • Bulletin preparation – people are involved in preparing, printing and folding the newsletter.
  • Flower arranger
  • Volunteer – takes food and money that has been collected from parishioners in the coffee mornings to the food bank
  • Funeral Server – Master of Ceremonies – carries the cross at funerals
