Year 4 enjoyed sharing their class Celebration of the Word with parents so they decided to share it with their peers in school as well.
Y3 History Debate – When was the Greatest Age in Prehistory to live – Stone, Bronze or Iron?
The young historians in Y3 took part in an oracy session, where they took sides and respectfully debated the advantages and disadvantages of living in each period in Prehistory ( considering the changes that had occurred). They came up with many logical arguments, that they bravely stood up to articulate with confidence to the group. They listened, understood and then responded to the view of their fellow historians.
It proved to be a great session, where the children not only thought like historians, but also spoke like ones too. They then went on to write a response to the question with the disciplinary knowledge they had developed from the debating lesson.
Reception Visit the Post Office
This morning the children in reception walked to the Post Office to post their letters to Santa! We know that Santa is very busy at this time of year but we are hoping that he can squeeze in a reply…
Year 2 Writing
This half term, the children in Year 2 have thoroughly enjoyed their Goldilocks and the Three Bears writing unit. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and effort throughout the process.
The unit began with an exciting ‘hook’ during our visit to West Boldon Lodge, which sparked their imaginations and set the scene for their learning. From there, they’ve embraced our whole-school writing unit, which has included skills lessons, identifying the key features of a narrative, comprehension based on a model text and detailed planning.
This week, the children completed their Big Write task, and we couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and dedication. They have exceeded expectations, writing at length and including a fantastic range of the skills they’ve been learning so far in Year 2. It’s also been delightful to see how much they’ve improved the presentation of their work—many of them are already joining letters!
Well done, Year 2! We are so impressed by your determination and progress. Keep up the great work!
Year 4 Fire Safety in the Home
Year 4 welcomed a visitor from the Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service yesterday afternoon. Rachel taught the children how to stay safe at home to prevent fires from starting and what to do in the event of a fire occurring.
The children identified potential hazards in the home and how to stay safe.
They were very knowledgeable and came up with some great responses, including;
- Always turn off electrical appliances once you’re finished using them
- Do not leave pans on the hob unattended
- Do not leave food in the oven if you pop out of the house
- Do not keep anything on top of a microwave
- Do not put anything metal into the toaster
- Do not leave tea towels hanging up above the cooker
- Do not leave anything charging on your bed
- Do not leave your phones/technology on charge overnight
- Do not put clothes over an electric heater
- Do not overload plug points or extension cables
The children then learnt about the importance of a correctly functioning smoke alarm in the home and that these should be tested weekly, Rachel suggested ‘Test it Tuesday‘.
If a fire alarm was to be heard, the children were informed of how to raise the alarm and stay safe with this Escape Plan, as well as how to ring 999 and what to say when questioned:
Sportshall Athletics Silver Success!
The Sportshall Athletics squad achieved a brilliant team silver in the District Competition today!
Our young athletes have shown great dedication to train for the event, while everyone performed superbly contributing to our team. There were many fantastic performances, which saw lots of our children achieving personal bests!
I was so proud of how everyone supported each other; congratulations to everyone in our team! Thank you also to our fantastic parent helpers today, who supported the children so well throughout.
Exploring Our Five Senses in Year 1
Year 1 has been explore and learn about their five senses. Through hands-on investigations, the children discovered how each sense helps us understand and navigate the world around us.
Hearing
The children sharpened their listening skills by identifying everyday noises. From ringing phones to sea waves, it was amazing to see how well their ears could detect and differentiate sounds.
Seeing
Next, we challenged the children to draw a house while blindfolded! It quickly became clear how important our eyes are for creating and observing details. With their blindfolds removed, they compared their drawings and enjoyed a good laugh!
Touch
For the sense of touch, we used a “feely bag” filled with familiar classroom objects. The children had to rely on their hands to feel the shape, texture, and size of each item, guessing what it might be.
Taste
In a tasty experiment, the class sampled a variety of crisps. From tangy salt and vinegar to cheese and onion flavours, the children had fun identifying their explain the tastes.
Smell
Finally, we used our noses to sniff out fruity scents. Guessing the fruit based on smell alone was a delightful way to engage their sense of smell.
The children loved these activities, and they’ve developed a deeper appreciation for their senses.
Y3 Festive Library Visit!
Y3 enjoyed a special festive visit to the Word where they were read some exciting Christmas stories. The children enjoyed changing their library books, seeing the magical Christmas decorations and finally reading their books back at school.
The children were perfectly behaved on our visit and are so enthusiastic to ‘make every day a reading day.’
Year 2 Observation drawings
The children in Year 2 have enjoyed creating observational drawings using oil pastels in the style of Cezanne this afternoon.
Year 4 Celebration of the Word – The Lost Sheep
In RE, Year 4 have been learning about Reconciliation. Some of the children have been preparing for their First Reconciliation. The Sacrament of Reconciliation celebrates the fact that we are loved and forgiven by God and that when we say sorry to one another and experience forgiveness we are experiencing God’s forgiveness.
We all know that God loves us and is always ready to forgive us, no matter what. His love for us is unconditional. The children wanted to share this unconditional love and friendship with their families and friends in our ‘Lost Sheep’ Celebration of the Word.
