Year 5 STEMfest workshop

18th October 2021 By lusher

As part of our ‘Space’ topic, Year 5 participated in STEMfest In Space!

We joined the virtual Rocking Robots & Rovers pop-up workshop, beamed live into our classroom from the National Space Centre. Year 5 had to imagine they were astronauts and could take our school to Mars! After listening to a presentation by solar scientist, Dr Helen Mason and space artist, Helen Schell, they designed their own robot or rover.

The children had to consider what technology their invention would need and how the Sun’s energy could power their machine. We had lots of very creative ideas!

We were also very lucky and some of our pupils’ space questions were chosen to be answered by Dr Mason during the call. We may just have some future astronauts amongst us!

Year 1 at Gibside

12th October 2021 By kmcvittie

Year 1 enjoyed an autumnal day at Gibside, as part of their science topic, ‘Seasonal Change’. The children looked for signs that autumn was here and collected leaves, acorns and conkers to take back to class. They have also been learning about animals that hibernate, so decided to make some hedgehog homes. The children used materials around them to create a warm, waterproof shelter for them.

Although it rained most of the day, year 1 made the most of it and enjoyed a treat at the playpark for their amazing efforts.

Year 2’s trip to The Rising Sun Country Park

11th October 2021 By Samantha McHugh

The Year 2 children had a fantastic time on their trip today to The Rising Sun Country Park.

We began the day looking at different habitats including pond and woodland habitats. The children had the opportunity to take part in a pond dipping activity where they caught and identified lots of different living things. The children caught fish, diving beetles, nymphs, pond snails, water boatman and plenty of pond weed! We then took part in a natural art workshop where the children created pond creatures using only natural materials.

After lunch the children completed a mini beast hunt and identified and classified the mini beasts based on their number of legs. The children ended the day by creating mini beast hotels, some of which included hot tubs and cinemas. Those bugs were really living the life!

It was a pleasure to take the children out on their first school trip and their behaviour was perfect! Thank you again to all adults who came along to support us on the trip, it was very much appreciated.

Miss Langley

Y3 Travel Back to Prehistory!

8th October 2021 By kmcvittie

Y3 enjoyed travelling back in time to Prehistory today. The children created a human timeline that stretched back from 2021 to the beginning of the Stone Age. Everyone became young archaeologists as they handled and described a variety of artefacts. We learned about the changes from the Stone Age to the Iron Age; as well as playing Prehistoric games in a fun filled, educational afternoon!

Year 4 Arbeia Roman Fort Trip

7th October 2021 By vickidavis

The children in Year 4 have enjoyed a great day out to Arbeia Roman Fort in South Shields.

We enjoyed a tour of the fort learning about the history of the fort and what it was used for centuries ago. We also enjoyed taking part in an artefact handling session. The children also visited the Museum where they did a bit art work and after lunch went to the top of the West Gate to take in the beautiful views before taking a visit to the ‘gift shop’.

It was a pleasure to take out the children for their first school trip in a long time and their behaviour was impeccable. A great day out by all and after all that walking, they will definitely sleep tonight!

Y3 Cave Art

6th October 2021 By kmcvittie

Y3 have been researching Stone Age art and investigated what early man would have used to create drawings.

The children experimented using natural materials to make shapes and lines.  They used berries, leaves, charcoal and spices like cave men would have done thousands of years ago!

Y3 then produced their own fantastic prehistoric images. The fantastic art produced would not have been out of place in the spectacular artistic caves of Lascaux (France) or Altamira (Spain).

Y1’s Colour Creations

5th October 2021 By kmcvittie

Year 1 have made a fantastic start to their ‘Colour Creations’ art topic. So far they have looked at art work created by Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko, Paul Klee and Jackson Pollock. We observed their use of primary and secondary colours, as well as tints, shading and techniques which they used to create their art work. We then took inspiration from them to create our own masterpieces.

Science: PanPipes

5th October 2021 By vickidavis

The children have been learning about sound in Science and have been investigating the volume and pitch of a sound. They had to make an ‘instrument’ which could create different pitches.

The children thoroughly enjoyed being creative and making their straw pan-pipes!

Activities included writing in Japanese hiragana, aboriginal dot paintings from Australia, producing a Maasai Necklace (Kenya), Athletics, Tag Rugby, Hockey, Futsal, Tug of War, Dodgeball, and much more. Thanks again to the brilliant children who will all receive their Olympic torch medals in September, as the Olympic values were displayed by everyone throughout!
