Yesterday, the Year 2 children enjoyed a visit to West Boldon Lodge as a hook for their new history topic, The Great Fire of London. They had great fun building their own version of Pudding Lane before setting it alight and watching the fire spread just as it did in 1666. Afterwards, they made bread and cooked it over the fire like Thomas Farriner—and even had a little taste!

Celebrating Our Young Authors – Congratulations, Year 2!
Just before Christmas, our Year 2 class took part in an exciting writing competition where the children were challenged to design and describe their very own monster. Their imagination, creativity, and enthusiasm were fantastic, and we were thrilled to learn that every child in Year 2 had their work selected to be published in a special book. What an amazing achievement for the whole class — well done, Year 2!
We are also incredibly proud to share that one of our Year 2 children, was chosen as the overall winner of the entire book. Her brilliant monster description won her a £10 National Book Tokens voucher, and her entry was even selected to appear on the front cover of the published book — an outstanding accomplishment!
Well done- we are super proud of you! 🌟📚👹
And a big congratulations to the whole of Year 2 for their wonderful work!![]()
Year 5 Open Morning at St Wilfrid’s
This week, our Year 5 pupils enjoyed an exciting visit to St. Wilfrid’s RC College for an Open Morning.
Throughout the morning, our pupils were able to fully immerse themselves in secondary-school life. They took part in a range of hands-on learning experiences, met members of the school community, and explored how St Wilfrid’s supports pupils as they move into Year 7.
One of the highlights of the visit was the chance to experience real lessons taught by specialist secondary teachers. In Art, pupils explored the vibrant work of artist Klara Reis. Inspired by her style, they created their own stunning pieces using petri dishes, inks, and other mixed media. The activity encouraged creativity, careful colour choices and an appreciation for contemporary art techniques.
In Science, pupils worked in teams to build their own marshmallow catapults. This challenge demanded teamwork, problem solving and plenty of perseverance. The children carefully refined their ideas before putting their catapults to the test. We enjoyed seeing whose catapult could launch a marshmallow the furthest!
During the visit, pupils also had the chance to meet senior leaders, teaching staff and members of the pastoral team. They also learned more about the transition to Year 7, including the support in place for new starters. We are very thankful to the staff at St. Wilfrid’s for a wonderful morning!

Year 1 Animators in Action!
After lunch, the class enjoyed some time in the library, where everyone chose a book to bring back and share in class. It was a brilliant day of creativity, storytelling, and reading!
Year 5’s Brilliant Bakers
Year 5 made some delicious pretzels as part of their DT unit this week. They carefully considered which additional ingredients they wanted to add to a basic recipe to give their design a flavoursome, well-balanced taste. Year 5 worked very well with our wonderful kitchen team, leading to fantastic results.
Good work, Year 5!
Year 5 Hoops 4 Health Roadshow
Year 5 had the fantastic opportunity to work with some of the players from Newcastle Eagles this week. They took part in the wonderful Hoops 4 Health roadshow. The afternoon centred around ways to stay active and healthy. Plus, there was the opportunity to play some basketball! Year 5 worked very hard and had a brilliant afternoon. Here are some photos of what we got up to:
Year 2 Science- Circuits
In today’s science lesson, the Year 2 children explored how electricity works by building their own simple circuits. Using batteries, wires, bulbs, and buzzers, they investigated what a circuit needs in order to work properly.
The class confidently recalled that a circuit must be continuous—they remembered this well because circuit sounds like circle, which helped them understand that electricity can only flow when everything is connected in a complete loop. Using this idea, the children experimented with joining different components and quickly spotted when a circuit was broken.
They showed fantastic problem‑solving skills: checking their connections, turning batteries around, swapping wires, and trying new arrangements until their lightbulbs lit up and their buzzers sounded. Many groups worked together brilliantly, discussing what might be wrong and how to fix it.
By the end of the lesson, the children could identify key circuit components and explain in their own words what makes a circuit work. It was an exciting, hands‑on session that sparked curiosity and built confidence in using scientific vocabulary such as battery, bulb, wire, switch, and circuit.

Year 3 – Our Journeys Celebration Of The Word
The Y3 children shared a thoughtful and reflective Celebration of the Word today with their families. They described their own personal journeys that they enjoy with favourite interests; while acknowledging the supportive family members who guide them and share the joy of their experiences.
Year 6 Get Creative at Open Zone!
This week, Year 6 enjoyed an exciting trip to Open Zone at The Word in South Shields, where they spent the morning becoming digital designers.
During their workshop, pupils used Tinkercad, a 3D design platform that introduces young learners to CAD (Computer‑Aided Design) in a fun, accessible way. The task was to design their very own ‘ice palace.’
The session involved:
- Learning the basics of 3D modelling, including how to move, rotate and resize shapes
- Experimenting with geometric forms to create towers, domes, archways and frosty features
- Combining shapes to build more complex structures, thinking carefully about scale, balance and symmetry
- Using creativity and problem‑solving skills to produce a magical, imaginative palace design
The children were highly motivated, especially after Mrs C announced that the top three designs will be 3D printed! This has caused great excitement in class, and pupils can’t wait to see which creations come to life as real 3D models.
After their digital design session, Year 6 visited the library within The Word to return their reading books and choose new titles to loan.
Y3/4 District Sportshall Athletics – Team Silver Success!
Our young Sportshall Athletics team achieved brilliant team silver medals in the District Finals today. The children were amazing considering it was their first indoor athletics event!
