Year 5 First Aid Workshop

1st October 2025 By lusher

Today, our Year 5 pupils took part in an exciting and hands-on First Aid workshop! They explored the contents of a first aid bag, learned how to check their pulse, and were introduced to the DRABC steps (a method for assessing emergency situations).

The highlight of the session was practising CPR on training dummies and learning how to use a defibrillator safely and effectively.

Well done, Year 5!

Anglo Saxon History Workshop

30th September 2025 By lusher

Year 5 recently enjoyed a wonderful history workshop with Richard (‘That History Bloke’).

We explored the lives of Anglo Saxon monks and discovered how important they were. Richard really brought the past to life as he shared many aspects of Anglo Saxon times with us. The pupils loved learning sign language that was use by Anglo Saxon monks and handling different artefacts. Just as Richard intended, we learned lots and we had lots of fun!

Here is a selection of photos of the children enjoying their brilliant afternoon:

A New Opportunity for Year 5: Mini Police at St Bede’s

A New Opportunity for Year 5: Mini Police at St Bede’s

We were excited to welcome Darren and Steven from Northumbria Police to our school last week to introduce the Mini Police scheme to our Year 5 pupils.

This fantastic initiative offers a fun and interactive volunteering opportunity for children aged 9–10. Through engaging activities and positive interaction with local police officers, pupils will learn about citizenship, community responsibility, and the role of the police in keeping us safe.

The scheme aims to:

  • Build trust and confidence in the police
  • Encourage community participation and problem solving
  • Promote self-esteem, teamwork, and responsibility
  • Deliver important messages in a positive and engaging way

Ten pupils will be selected to join the Mini Police team this year. If your child is interested, they need to write a short letter explaining why they would like to take part and what they hope to gain from the experience. We will spend some time working on this together in class so anything else completed at home is a bonus!

We’re looking forward to seeing our pupils grow as confident, responsible citizens through this exciting opportunity.

Y5 Bikeability

29th September 2025 By lusher

Congratulations to our Year 5 cyclists!

Well done to all of our Year 5 pupils who recently completed Bikeability Level 2 training with the Bikeability instructors. This programme helps young cyclists develop the skills and confidence needed to ride safely and responsibly on the road.

During the training, pupils learned how to:

  • Start and stop with greater control
  • Safely pass parked vehicles
  • Understand road signs, signals and markings
  • Navigate junctions, crossroads and roundabouts
  • Share the road with other vehicles

This is a fantastic achievement and an important step towards becoming independent and safe road users. We are very proud of your hard work and focus throughout the sessions. Well done!

St Bede’s Art Gallery

8th September 2025 By Samantha McHugh

🎨 Our First St Bede’s Art Gallery!

We’re delighted to invite you to explore our very first St Bede’s Art Gallery, a celebration of creativity, reflection, and faith. Over the past academic year, children from Nursery to Year 5 have taken part in the Spirited Arts competition, exploring the theme “All God’s Creatures.”

Each piece of artwork has been thoughtfully linked to words from Scripture, helping our pupils reflect on the beauty and meaning of God’s creation. From colourful collages to intricate sculptures, the children have poured their hearts into expressing how animals and nature connect to faith, care, and wonder.

🖼️ The gallery is on display for you to enjoy from Monday to Wednesday this week on your way to and from the curriculum meetings. We hope it brings you joy, inspiration, and pride in the incredible work your children have created.

This is our first time hosting an art gallery, and we hope to make it a yearly tradition—not only to showcase our children’s talents, but also to help raise funds for the school.

📖 Before you leave, please take a moment to share your feedback or ideas in the book provided at the door. Your thoughts will help us grow and make future exhibitions even more special.

Thank you for your continued support.

Year 5 Raingarden Sessions with Durham Wildlife Trust

14th March 2025 By lusher

Climate Change & Raingardens @ Durham Wildlife Trust

John from Durham Wildlife Trust recently visited us for two days to work with Year 5 on a practical solution to surface flooding from heavy rainfall. The project led to the building of a raingarden on our school site. You can spot it near the main entrance of our school. Year 5 pupils worked well to learn the instructions and follow them successfully.

What is a Raingarden?
A raingarden is a simple and effective way to help avoid surface flooding due to heavy rain. It also provides a micro wetland habitat for wildlife.

How does it work?
Rain water run-off from the down pipe of a gutter is diverted to a container which houses layers of filtration materials. The rain water works its way through the layers and then returns to the drainage system via an exit pipe.

Why do we need one?
This process slows down the rate of water flow into the drain system, thereby reducing the risk of sewers becoming overwhelmed and flooding the surface during times of very heavy rain.

Take a look at Year 5 in action:
