Year 2 Electiricity

5th February 2025 By Samantha McHugh

After an exciting journey exploring the world of electricity, the children in Year 2  have successfully completed their Science topic with a hands-on, practical lesson in building simple circuits!

Throughout this topic, the class has learned all about how electricity powers our everyday devices. They discovered the key components of a circuit—batteries, wires, and bulbs—and explored how electricity flows through them. This final lesson allowed the students to put their knowledge into action by creating their own circuits!

Each student had the chance to connect wires to batteries and lightbulbs, making sure to form a complete circuit to get the lights shining.   The lesson not only helped solidify their understanding of how electricity works but also encouraged teamwork and problem-solving skills. There were plenty of “Eureka!” moments as the student figured out how to make the circuits work, and they were thrilled when their circuits lit up or made noise.

Year 2 Celebration of the Word

31st January 2025 By Samantha McHugh

Year 2 has had an exciting and meaningful exploration of the different books used in church and in everyday life as part of our current RE topic, Books. The children discovered the significance of these books in our faith and how they help us grow in our understanding of God’s word.

The highlight of their learning was their excellent retelling of the story of Jesus’ Baptism. With great enthusiasm and confidence, the children shared this important moment in the life of Jesus, projecting their voices excellently and bringing the story to life for everyone to enjoy.

Mrs. McHugh is incredibly proud of the children for their hard work, dedication, and effort. Their ability to recall and share the story with such clarity and passion is a testament to their deep engagement with the topic.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support the children and make this event even more special. Your presence meant a lot to the children and added to the joy of the celebration.

As a well-deserved treat for their hard work, the children enjoyed some biscuits back in class, sharing their excitement and reflecting on the celebration together.

Well done to all the children who took part in our recent Whole School Girls vs Boys Battle of the Bands tournament on Times Tables Rock-Stars.

Overall, the Boys won the tournament but there were some very dedicated, hard-working children trying their best to score the most points!

The top 3 girls and the top 3 boys had a chance to show their “Rock’n’Roll” side for their winners photographs.

Congratulations to them all and well done!

Hey Ewe!

12th December 2024 By kmcvittie

This Christmas, the infants delighted audiences with their heart-warming and humorous performance of Hey Ewe! – a fresh take on the traditional Nativity story, told through the eyes of an excitable and curious young sheep.

The youngest ewe in the flock, full of questions and boundless energy, charmed everyone with her inquisitive nature. While the rest of the sheep were happy to stick to their routines, she found herself drawn into the extraordinary events surrounding the birth of Jesus. From shepherds and angels to a very special baby, her curiosity led the audience on a magical journey, reminding us all to see the wonder of the Nativity with fresh eyes.

The children shone on stage, their enthusiasm and joy capturing the true spirit of the season.

A huge well done to all the children who worked so hard to make this year’s production a success. Merry Christmas!

A Magical Visit from Father Christmas

11th December 2024 By kmcvittie

Today was full of Christmas magic as we celebrated Christmas Pyjama Day! The children arrived in their cosiest pyjamas, ready for a day of festive fun.

We gathered around the Christmas tree for a special storytime when, to our amazement, Father Christmas himself made a surprise appearance! The excitement was electric as he joined us by the tree to share one of his favourite stories, The Gruffalo.

After the story, Father Christmas answered some of the children’s curious questions—there were plenty! The children couldn’t wait to tell him all about the mischief their naughty elves had been causing at home.

It was a truly magical moment! Thank you, Father Christmas, for making our day so special!

10th December 2024 By Samantha McHugh

Last week, our Year 2 children had a magical visit to The Word! The morning was filled with festive cheer as we listened to enchanting Christmas stories, sparking imaginations and setting the perfect seasonal mood.

The children then got creative, crafting delightful Christmas-themed pictures to take home and share with their families. Their creativity and enthusiasm shone brightly throughout!

Afterwards, the children explored the library’s wonderful collection of books independently, discovering new titles that piqued their interest. We were thrilled to bring back some exciting books to support our next school topic—our library is looking more vibrant than ever!

A huge thank you to the staff at The Word for making our visit so special. The children left inspired, creative, and ready to dive into their next literary adventures!

Year 2 Writing

29th November 2024 By Samantha McHugh

This half term, the children in Year 2 have thoroughly enjoyed their Goldilocks and the Three Bears writing unit. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and effort throughout the process.

The unit began with an exciting ‘hook’ during our visit to West Boldon Lodge, which sparked their imaginations and set the scene for their learning. From there, they’ve embraced our whole-school writing unit, which has included skills lessons, identifying the key features of a narrative, comprehension based on a model text and detailed planning.

This week, the children completed their Big Write task, and we couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and dedication. They have exceeded expectations, writing at length and including a fantastic range of the skills they’ve been learning so far in Year 2. It’s also been delightful to see how much they’ve improved the presentation of their work—many of them are already joining letters!

Well done, Year 2! We are so impressed by your determination and progress. Keep up the great work!

West Boldon Lodge Year 2

5th November 2024 By Samantha McHugh

Yesterday, Year 2 had an unforgettable day at West Boldon Lodge, diving into literacy and science in the beautiful autumn outdoors! Our day began with a Goldilocks and the Three Bears workshop, the perfect hook for our new writing unit, sparking creativity and storytelling. The children used the natural autumn treasures they collected to make their very own bear masks, bringing the beloved characters to life. They also crafted bear faces on the trees using clay, much like the bears from the story appeared in the illustrations. To make the experience complete, everyone gathered around to make porridge over an open fire – just like Goldilocks!
In the afternoon, our focus turned to science with a hands-on life cycle workshop. The children set off on a “treasure hunt,” searching for clues related to different stages of life cycles and collecting life cycle poems along the way. Working in teams, they pieced together the stages of various life cycles and proudly presented their findings to their classmates in a fun competition.
The day wrapped up with pond dipping – a thrilling adventure as the children discovered a variety of creatures in the water. This activity wasn’t just exciting but also educational, as they learned about the different needs animals have to survive.
Our Year 2 students came away with new knowledge, wonderful memories, and even a few muddy boots! Thank you to West Boldon Lodge for hosting such an enriching experience!
What a great start to the half term!
