During the virtual visit, Hannah spoke about her bestselling books The Last Bear and The Lost Whale. She also introduced the children to her highly anticipated third book, Finding Bear. Hannah spoke about her exciting work and the background to her latest book, as well as answering pupils’ questions in a Q&A session.

Some of the children enjoyed listening to Hannah so much that they were motivated to write their own animal stories inspired by Finding Bear.

Y1 Gibside Visit

17th October 2023 By kmcvittie

Year 1 enjoyed an autumnal day at Gibside, as part of their science topic, ‘Seasonal Change’. They searched for indications of the arrival of autumn and collected leaves, acorns, and conkers to bring back to the classroom. Using the natural materials surrounding them, they engaged in creating autumn crowns, picture frames, and stick creatures.

After lunch we had a lovely walk through the walled garden where we saw pumpkins and apples growing.

Despite the slight chill in the air, Year 1 made the most of their experience and were rewarded with a visit to the play area to celebrate their exceptional efforts throughout the term.

Thank you to all of the parent helpers for making this trip possible.

Year 5 History Workshop

10th October 2023 By lusher

Last week, Year 5 had a special History workshop.

We explored the lives of Anglo Saxon monks which is part of our History topic this term. Richard really brought the past to life as he shared many aspects of Anglo Saxon times with us.

Just as Richard intended, we learned lots and we had lots of fun!

Here is a selection of photos of the children enjoying their brilliant afternoon:

Northumberland, Tyne & Wear Basketball Champions League Success!

1st October 2023 By bmcvittie

On Friday evening, our basketballers represented South Tyneside in the Champion of Champions Regional Finals at the Vertu Motor Arena in Newcastle.  Despite losing our first game, our players showed a lot of character to respond and claim amazing team silver medals!

Victories over New Deleval ( Northumberland), Glynwood (Gateshead) and Preston Grange (North Tyneside) set up a Champion of Champions final against Gosforth Junior Academy (Newcastle) one of the largest primaries in the north east.

Our children were not overawed by playing in front of 3500 spectators or taking on the talented Gosforth school; who had previously won all their games by big margins. Instead we had lots of good possession and took the game to them for the majority of the match creating several chances. However, it wasn’t to be as the Gosforth star player hit 2 outstanding shots from difficult positions to help his school claim the title.

One hundred and seventy two teams were involved in the Hoops4health north east tournament this year, so to become District Champions, then reach the Champion of Champions Grand Final was an incredible achievement.

I was bursting with pride for our players, especially for the skill and personality they showed in the Grand final against Gosforth. The whole squad have developed as both players and people throughout the basketball season.

Meanwhile, it was truly uplifting to see the brilliant support from our St. Bede’s community who travelled to Newcastle to support our children on their exciting sporting journey!
