A Magical Visit from Father Christmas

11th December 2024 By kmcvittie

Today was full of Christmas magic as we celebrated Christmas Pyjama Day! The children arrived in their cosiest pyjamas, ready for a day of festive fun.

We gathered around the Christmas tree for a special storytime when, to our amazement, Father Christmas himself made a surprise appearance! The excitement was electric as he joined us by the tree to share one of his favourite stories, The Gruffalo.

After the story, Father Christmas answered some of the children’s curious questions—there were plenty! The children couldn’t wait to tell him all about the mischief their naughty elves had been causing at home.

It was a truly magical moment! Thank you, Father Christmas, for making our day so special!

Y1’s Christingle Celebration

11th December 2024 By kmcvittie

Year 1 explored the story of the Christingle and created their own as part of our Advent preparations. We began by learning about Bishop John de Watteville, who shared the first Christingle with children in his village to teach them about God’s promises.

Through the story, we discovered that:

  • The orange represents the world, created by God and full of goodness.
  • The red ribbon wrapped around the orange symbolises God’s love encircling the world.
  • The four sticks symbolise the four seasons, and the treats on them remind us of the gifts God provides.
  • The candle signifies Jesus, the Light of the World, shining in dark places.

The children thoroughly enjoyed making their own Christingles, carefully assembling each part and reflecting on its meaning. We concluded our lesson with a special Christingle Celebration of the Word, where we shared the story of the Christingle and talked about how we can share God’s love with others.

The flickering light of the candles reminded us all of the importance of kindness and hope, especially during this season of Advent.

Christmas visit to The Word

10th December 2024 By Samantha McHugh

Last week, our Year 2 children had a magical visit to The Word! The morning was filled with festive cheer as we listened to enchanting Christmas stories, sparking imaginations and setting the perfect seasonal mood.

The children then got creative, crafting delightful Christmas-themed pictures to take home and share with their families. Their creativity and enthusiasm shone brightly throughout!

Afterwards, the children explored the library’s wonderful collection of books independently, discovering new titles that piqued their interest. We were thrilled to bring back some exciting books to support our next school topic—our library is looking more vibrant than ever!

A huge thank you to the staff at The Word for making our visit so special. The children left inspired, creative, and ready to dive into their next literary adventures!

Y1’s Festive Fun at The Word!

10th December 2024 By kmcvittie

This morning, Year 1 enjoyed a festive visit to The Word library. The session began with the children listening to enchanting Christmas tales that sparked their imaginations and set the holiday mood.

Afterwards, the children got crafty, creating their very own Santas using paper and cotton wool—there were lots of smiles as they carefully stuck, shaped, and assembled their festive masterpieces!

To finish off the morning, the children were given the chance to explore the library shelves and choose books to bring back to class. We can’t wait to dive into our new stories and continue our love of reading back at school!

Year 5 Art Trip

6th December 2024 By lusher

Year 5 visited South Shields Museum for a wonderful art workshop which tied in perfectly with our ‘Portraits’ topic. We were lucky enough to explore some portraits from the gallery’s stores, and complete activities using artwork in the exhibitions. We also had time to create a personal response afterwards by drawing self-portraits using a mixture of materials. What a lovely afternoon!

6th December 2024 By bmcvittie

After reading scripture from the prophet Isaiah, Year 3 have been working in drama groups to demonstrate how we should behave during Advent, as we prepare for Christmas. We explored and depicted giving alms to the homeless, looking after the elderly, praying regularly to talk to God, showing love in our friendship groups and showing understanding with our friends. All of the children collaborated and showed excellent oracy skills with their friends.
