This morning the year 3 school councillors visited the Town Hall for their annual democracy event. The event is designed to explore the ideas that underpin democracy and the democratic process in a fun and creative way.
Initially the children took part in a story-telling session called, ‘Staryland’. The Staryland story describes a magical island far away that, through a particular turn of events, finds itself in need of a new leader. The story asked the children to think about how the islanders could overcome the problem, how a new leader could be found, and what qualities that leader should possess.
After the story-telling session, the children were able to go and sit in the council chambers where they met two possible candidates and listened to their speeches about why they should be voted the next leader of Staryland.
The children then got to cast their votes inside of a polling booth and post them into a ballot box. Whilst the children enjoyed juice and biscuits the votes were counted and the new leader of Staryland was crowned!
Well done to the children who attended the event, their behaviour was exemplary and they were a credit to our school!
