South Tyneside Hoops4Health Basketball Champions 2026!

14th March 2026 By bmcvittie

Last night, our Y5 basketballers showed amazing skill and character to become District Champions at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle.

Firstly, St. Bede’s beat St. Oswald’s 18-0 in the semi-final, as we displayed some excellent passing and shooting.

The District final was played in front of a huge crowd at half time in the Eagles match. We got off to a flying start in the final, as we scored a basket in the opening minute after an excellent long shot from Ralph. We continued to take the game to a strong Stanhope side and added a second after a quick burst from Harvey. The players continued to play well passing the ball around confidently as a team. Captain Sophie added a brilliant third basket from a tight angle. Meanwhile, the defence was well organised by Poppy, as we didn’t concede a single basket on the night.  St. Bede’s went on to claim the title with an impressive 6-0 win.

I couldn’t have been prouder of the children for how they showed their wonderful ability and team play on a big stage. They were cheered on by brilliant family, staff and school community support in Newcastle on a special night.

The children will return to the Vertu Motors Arena later in the year, when we will represent South Tyneside in the Champion of Champions Regional Final.
