Our Y3/4 & Y5/6 athletes were presented with their gold medals today which were kindly provided by the South Tyneside School Sport Network. Earlier this month they sensationally both became South Tyneside Champions at Monkton Stadium. Both teams then went on to represent our District in the County Finals where they again performed superbly. Congratulations on your golden performances!
Y3 Orienteering Certificates For Our Outdoor Adventurers!
Last week Y3 were presented with their Orienteering certificates after their brilliant teamwork and problem solving skills helped them to navigate around Marine Park recently.
I look forward to presenting more certificates and medals on Tuesday for recent events.
Y3 Art Nouveau & Patterns in Nature
We have many keen artists in Y3 and they have really enjoyed their Patterns in Nature unit. The inspiration has been the brilliant Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Art Nouveau era (1890’s to the eve of World War One). The children have explored using a wide range of art and design techniques using colour, pattern, tone, line and shape. They have especially loved painting with watercolours to control tone in their pantings. They have produced some wonderful art that they should all be proud of- well done everyone!
When Tom Palmer came to St Bede’s!
We were thrilled to welcome award-winning author Tom Palmer to our school this week for an exciting and inspiring visit with our KS2 children.
Tom spoke passionately about his journey as a writer and the importance of reading, captivating pupils with stories from his books and real-life experiences.
The children had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about writing, books, and what it’s like to be an author. Tom’s answers were both insightful and encouraging, sparking curiosity and creativity across the room.
One of the highlights of the visit was a lively penalty shootout quiz, where pupils tested their knowledge in a fun and interactive way, combining sport and storytelling in true Tom Palmer style!
It was a fantastic morning that left our young readers and writers feeling motivated and full of ideas. A huge thank you to Tom for visiting and sharing his love of books with us!
Y3 Art Visit – The Spirit of the North East Exhibition by Richard Hobson & Patterns in Local Nature Workshop
Year 3 enjoyed a great morning at South Shields Museum viewing an exhibition by local artist Richard Hobson entitled, ‘Spirit of the North East.’ The exhibition captures the changing landscapes and communities of our local heritage; the bustling shipyards, remnants of past industry and his fantastic paintings of our beautiful natural world.
The children learned all about Richard Hobson and re-enacted some of his most famous paintings. Our children were truly inspired by Hobson’s passion for art and our local area.
We also enjoyed an exciting workshop using watercolours, where the children demonstrated real skill to paint a natural landscape from our local area.
Incredible Illustrations with Liz Million
We were thrilled to welcome Liz Million to our school this week for a fun and inspiring visit. The day began with a whole-school assembly where Liz introduced herself and shared the story of how she became a professional illustrator. Liz’s energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and the children were fascinated to hear about the books she’s worked on and the creative process behind her illustrations.
Throughout the day, each class took part in hands-on workshops led by Liz, where they learned some of her top tips for drawing. With a theme of ‘All God’s Creatures,’ the children explored how to bring animals to life on the page using simple shapes (like tacos, potatoes, and door arches) as the building blocks for their drawings. It was incredible to see how quickly Liz could create a character and even more exciting to see the amazing artwork the children produced using her techniques.
The day was a wonderful celebration of creativity, and it was clear from the smiles and laughter that Liz inspired a lot of budding young artists!
Y3 Orienteering!
Y3 today enjoyed orienteering around South Marine Park by using their mapwork skills. They navigated around the park in teams to find letters and numbers which helped them to solve a variety of puzzles. During the course, they also embarked on several problem solving activities, where they had to use communication and teamwork skills. The children were fantastic and really embraced the challenges in a wonderful event! Thank you to our fantastic parent helpers!
Y3 District Tennis Champions 2025 & 3rd Place!
Congratulations to our two Y3 tennis teams who enjoyed a great afternoon at Boldon Lawn Tennis Club today. Not only did our B team win brilliant bronze medals, but our A team were simply unstoppable and were crowned District Champions 2025- an outstanding achievement!
The children have only had access to tennis rackets over the last three weeks, but have really enjoyed developing their tennis together, both in PE and during lunch time practises.
It was great having two squads at Boldon for the finals and it was wonderful to see the children play with such skill and enthusiasm.
Congratulations once again to brilliant tennis players and thank you to our fantastic parent helpers at Boldon who gave the children wonderful support.
Y3 Botanists Dissecting Flowers
Our young botanists in Y3 have been carefully dissecting the different parts of a flower. They’ve investigated the functions of the petals, stamen, carpel and sepal. The children discovered that tulips, chrysanthemums and carnations had more petals than sepals. As we move through Spring, I’m sure they’ll be identifying all of beautiful flowers growing in our local area!
Easter Mystery
On the last day of term, children in EYFS and KS1 will be given a copy of The Easter Story to share with their families at home. KS2 children will be given a copy of the Stations of the Cross, with images drawn by the Mini Vinnies, to take home to share with their families also.
By sharing the Easter story and the Passion of Christ, we remember the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. As a family, please take time to stop and think about the true meaning of Easter.
We wish you all a happy, healthy and holy Easter!
