Year 5/6 Athletics Event

12th June 2024 By lusher

Three teams of pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 enjoyed competing at Monkton Stadium in the Quadkids Athletics event this week. Everyone tried so hard and should be extremely pleased with their performances and I was very proud to see everyone supporting each other with lots of enthusiasm and kind words. The children had buckets of positive energy and it was a delight to hear them cheering each other on. A huge ‘well done’ from Mrs Usher.

Y3/4 District Athletics Champions 2024!

9th June 2024 By bmcvittie

Thirty Y3/4 athletes had a wonderful time competing in the District Athletics Championships at Monkton Stadium; while we have also just found out that our A Team are District Champions – a great achievement considering there were 47 teams taking part!

All of our children had a great attitude in training and everyone aimed for  personal best performances in the finals. Once again, the support throughout the squad for each other was so positive and up lifting- well done everyone!

The A team will now go on to represent South Tyneside in the County Finals on Friday 21st June at Monkton Stadium. They will compete against the best athletes from Newcastle, North Tyneside, Sunderland and Gateshead.

It was great to see so much support for St. Bede’s from our school community inside the stadium, which really helped inspire our teams.

Congratulations to our whole squad on a great day’s athletics and good luck to our A team in the County Finals!

Boccia!

26th March 2024 By bmcvittie

Our brilliant new Boccia squad were fantastic today in their first tournament! Three St. Bede’s squads played with a lot of skill and game intelligence in a high level competition. Despite a valiant effort after registering many wins, our teams just missed out on the finals today.

However, it has been wonderful watching the children develop in practises and it was great watching them have so much fun with their friends at the event. I was very proud of all three of our Boccia teams!

Thank you to our brilliant parent helpers for supporting our children today. The parents got into the positive spirit of the event so much that they enjoyed a few games of Boccia themselves- brilliant!

Basketball Bronze in Grand Finals Night!

9th March 2024 By bmcvittie

Our fantastic basketballers picked up well deserved bronze medals in the Grand Finals at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle on Friday night.

Since qualifying for the finals, I have been very impressed with how the children have been driven to enjoy their practises and improve. A difficult draw saw us paired with Stanhope in the semi finals who had beaten us (10-2) in qualifying.

However, our team had grown a lot in recent weeks and were more than ready for the challenge. Despite falling behind in the first few seconds, we responded by taking the game to the opposition. A mixture of good passing and driving runs forward saw us build up pressure, as we searched for an equaliser. Half way through the match we deservedly drew level with an excellent looping shot from Joseph. We continued to maintain the initiative and were unfortunate on a few occasions not to take the lead.

However, Stanhope were an excellent opponent and were always a threat on the break. Literally on the hooter, against the run of play Stanhope scored a decisive basket to book their place in the final and to conclude a spectacular contest.

I was so proud of our players for not only their response to going behind, but for the way they showcased their skills in such a grand arena. After getting past us in by far the game of the night, Stanhope went on to comfortably win the final.

Congratulations to our basketballers on contributing so much to a brilliant match. With the majority of our squad being so young, it felt that this wasn’t just the end of a great cup run, but also just the beginning of an exciting new side.

Thank you to our amazing parents and staff who supported the team so positively in Newcastle. Our children did themselves and their school proud, as they grew immeasurably on a wonderful sporting night.

Brilliant Basketballers Qualify for District Grand Final!

16th February 2024 By bmcvittie

Today three teams of St. Bede’s basketballers enjoyed the prestigious Hoops4Health Tournament at the Vertu Motors Arena, the home of the Newcastle Eagles. Amazingly, one of our teams qualified for the District Grand Finals event that takes place on Friday 8th March (before & during the Eagles match against the Manchester Giants).

I was firstly super proud that everyone came to school for the event in the half term holidays! In preparation, all of the children had trained enthusiastically over the winter months at lunchtimes. The children’s performances today really showed that practice pays off; as two of our teams reached the afternoon play-offs!

Throughout the day it was lovely to see our teams display good sportsmanship by shaking hands with their opponents after games. Meanwhile, it was up lifting for the children to see how many parents and family members who had travelled to Newcastle to support them at the event.

Thank you to our brilliant parent helpers who enabled us to have so many teams involved in the tournament. Finally, thank you to all of the children for the determination and skills displayed, which carried you all a long way on a wonderful day. I was extremely proud of you all as you have put so much into your basketball in recent months!
