District Basketball Finalists at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle!
Our talented basketballers were edged out of the District Grand Final on penalties last night after an excellent performance in Newcastle!
The St. Bede’s players immediately imposed themselves in the final and scored in the opening minute. We continued to play with a lot of attacking flare and created numerous opportunities, but couldn’t quite find a crucial second basket.
With just over a minute to go the opposition created a rare chance, which was clinically finished to bring parity. The St Bede’s players responded instantly, to wrestle back the initiative. We mounted several waves of attacks, as we searched for a winner with several shots bouncing away off the rim of the basket; including a final effort on the buzzer.
The final dramatically went to penalties, where two brave St. Bede’s children stepped up, but it was the opposition who were to triumph 2-1 from the free throw line.
Our players should be incredibly proud of how they played in a great sporting arena, enjoying lots of possession and playing a great final. You represented your school superbly and showed great ability and character that made everyone so proud of you all!
Thank you to our amazing parents and staff who supported the team so positively on a wonderful sporting night in Newcastle.

There were so many highlights from the day, including several children stepping in at short notice due to absences and performing so admirably. We had an incredible 6 podium finishers; the Y3 & Y4 boys won their team events, while many of our teams registered top 3 finishes in their respective year groups.
It was wonderful to have so many boys and girls representing our school in a single event. The children have shown incredible dedication to train for the competition and everyone did their best on the day. I was so proud of how everyone supported each other throughout the event!
While we couldn’t quite retain the shield we had won 4 out of the last 5 years, it was an incredible effort that went all the way to the final race. After looking at the great photos from today, and reflecting on everyone’s amazing efforts, the wonderful community support, I feel a great sense of pride in everyone’s contributions today!
Thank you to all our brilliant runners, parent helpers and those who supported the children at Temple Park! The children will receive well deserved team silver medals in the coming few weeks.

The children’s recent practises of playing skittles or visiting bowling alleys were certainly rewarded, as they achieved a brilliant fourth placed County finish! There were initially over 270 schools involved in the competition, so the children should all feel very pleased with their efforts! It was great to see the children embrace the occassion, show great sportsmanship and interact so positively with the other children involved. Well done everyone!

The children had a wonderful time with their friends and showed of a lot of ability and concentration to take the overall title. Well played everyone, I was really proud of you all!

Grand Final Basketball Qualifiers – Vertu Motors Arena Newcastle!
Today our basketball squad enjoyed the prestigious Hoops4Health Tournament at the Vertu Motors Arena, the home of the Newcastle Eagles. Amazingly, three of our teams reached the semi-finals! One of our teams successfully qualified for the District Grand Finals event ( date TBC) which will take place on the same night as an Eagles match with a capacity crowd watching on as St. Bede’s take to the court!
I was very proud of the determination, skills and teamship the children displayed, which took them all deep into the competition. It was wonderful watching all of our teams cheering for one another on the different pitches.
In preparation, all of the children had trained keenly over the winter months at lunchtimes. The children’s training efforts really showed today as they performed superbly at a great venue alongside their friends. Meanwhile, throughout the day it was lovely to see our teams display good sportsmanship by shaking hands with their opponents after games.
Thank you to our brilliant parent helpers who enabled us to have so many teams involved in the event. Finally, thank you to all of the children for your positive attitude and relentless efforts today, which carried you all a long way.

The County final today concludes an exciting Sportshall season, where I have been delighted with how everyone has supported each other in both training and competitions! Thank you also to our fantastic parent helpers today, who supported the children so positively throughout.
