Year 5 Open Morning at St Wilfrid’s
This week, our Year 5 pupils enjoyed an exciting visit to St. Wilfrid’s RC College for an Open Morning.
Throughout the morning, our pupils were able to fully immerse themselves in secondary-school life. They took part in a range of hands-on learning experiences, met members of the school community, and explored how St Wilfrid’s supports pupils as they move into Year 7.
One of the highlights of the visit was the chance to experience real lessons taught by specialist secondary teachers. In Art, pupils explored the vibrant work of artist Klara Reis. Inspired by her style, they created their own stunning pieces using petri dishes, inks, and other mixed media. The activity encouraged creativity, careful colour choices and an appreciation for contemporary art techniques.
In Science, pupils worked in teams to build their own marshmallow catapults. This challenge demanded teamwork, problem solving and plenty of perseverance. The children carefully refined their ideas before putting their catapults to the test. We enjoyed seeing whose catapult could launch a marshmallow the furthest!
During the visit, pupils also had the chance to meet senior leaders, teaching staff and members of the pastoral team. They also learned more about the transition to Year 7, including the support in place for new starters. We are very thankful to the staff at St. Wilfrid’s for a wonderful morning!

Year 5’s Brilliant Bakers
Year 5 made some delicious pretzels as part of their DT unit this week. They carefully considered which additional ingredients they wanted to add to a basic recipe to give their design a flavoursome, well-balanced taste. Year 5 worked very well with our wonderful kitchen team, leading to fantastic results.
Good work, Year 5!
Year 5 Hoops 4 Health Roadshow
Year 5 had the fantastic opportunity to work with some of the players from Newcastle Eagles this week. They took part in the wonderful Hoops 4 Health roadshow. The afternoon centred around ways to stay active and healthy. Plus, there was the opportunity to play some basketball! Year 5 worked very hard and had a brilliant afternoon. Here are some photos of what we got up to:
A fun-filled party for Years 5 and 6!
Year 5 Celebration of the Word
This week, our Year 5 pupils led a Celebration of the Word on the theme of Hope, sharing their reflections on Advent with their families. The focal point was the Advent wreath, reminding us that this season is a time of waiting in joyful hope for the coming of Jesus.
Through readings, prayers, and a litany of rejoicing, the children explored what it means to wait with hope and purpose. Parents were invited to join in singing a joyful hymn and to write messages of hope to hang on our tree.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. May this Advent season fill your hearts with hope and joy!
Mini Police at Armistice Day remembrance event
On Tuesday 11th November, the Mini Police were invited to attend the Armistice Day assembly taking place at Mill Dam, South Shields. A service was held at the Cenotaph where one of our pupils was asked to lay a wreath.
Accompanying staff commented on the wonderful level of respect shown by the pupils. Well done, Mini Police!
Our Year 5 Mini Police!
A big ‘well done’ to the ten Year 5 pupils who were inducted into the Mini Police this week. It was so hard to pick only ten children as the whole of Year 5 submitted wonderful applications. PC Steven and PC Darren agreed that they would have taken the entire class if they could!
We had a special assembly to let the rest of the school know who had ben chosen and the Mini Police were presented with their uniform. Don’t they look amazing?
Year 5 Dodgeball Superstars!
This week, Year 5 participated in a dodgeball event at Temple Park. Several schools joined together to play dodgeball and have lots of fun!
During the course of the morning, sports leaders were on the lookout for pupils who demonstrated core sporting values. Two of our pupils were awarded certificates – one for passion and one for honesty.
The entire class showed amazing effort and were so supportive of one another. It was joyous to hear them cheering each other on and sharing words of encouragement. Well done, Year 5!
