County Cricket & County Tennis Finals!

21st June 2019B McVittie

Amazingly we had two teams in two different sports competing in County Finals today! Our District Cricket Champions were playing at Mainsforth CC in Ferryhill, while the Y3 Tennis squad were at the Sunderland Tennis Centre.

Both teams had a fantastic time, supported their friends and gave a fantastic account of themselves. Indeed Miss Moffett and I were very proud of both teams, as they were very much the pride of South Tyneside – simultaneously at both Mainsforth and Sunderland.

District Cricket Champions 2019

20th May 2019B McVittie

Today our two cricket teams took part in the biggest competition in the region, with 40 teams involved. The B team went unbeaten all day, coming joint top of their group at a sunny South Shields Cricket Club.

The A team were also in top form, and in an exciting finale they managed a record run chase to become South Tyneside Champions. They will proudly go on to represent the borough in the County Finals in Durham.

The children were a credit to the school, as they displayed the true ‘spirit of cricket’ throughout.

Girls Cricket at Whitburn CC 16.6.17

16th June 2017B McVittie

Three girl’s cricket squads from St. Bede’s took part in the District Cricket Competition. It was hosted at the beautiful setting of Whitburn Cricket Club. On a hot day, the girls developed their batting, bowling and fielding skills. It was also good to see a lot of girls encouraging their friends.

One of our teams finished in third place, while all the girls tried hard throughout the day; especially the good-spirited younger players who bravely competed against year 6’s. On the day, St. Bede’s had three times as many children participating than any other school; while you all looked wonderful in your ‘cricket whites’.

All of the children batted, bowled and fielded enthusiastically at the fantastic setting of South Shields Cricket Club. There were 25 schools at the event; our A team reached the semi-finals, only to be knocked out by the eventual winners on the day.

It has been lovely to hear, that several of our children are returning to the club for further cricket opportunities this summer. Well done to everyone for taking part so positively on the day!

Girls Retain County Cup 2016!

10th July 2016B McVittie

Our talented Girls Cricketers displayed all of their skills and inspiring team spirit, in winning the County Cup on Tuesday at Chester-Le-Street CC.  The competition had 207 entries this season, but our girls literally bowled over the opposition! Five of our players were involved in last year’s County Cup success, so to retain it was a very unique achievement.

Group stage victories over Hurworth (Darlington), Sedgefield Primary and Neville’s Cross (Durham) saw our girls reach the semi-finals. Highly regarded Prior’s Mill (Stockton) were then brushed aside in the semi-final, to set up a final against a very strong cricketing school, Escomb (Wear Valley).

However our girls were not phased by the task in hand, as usual they more than rose to the occasion. Batting first we smashed 254 for the loss of no wicket in the final. The batting performance was then completely backed up by our bowling and fielding, as we took six Escomb wickets with spectacular catching and accurate bowling! Escomb never threatened our total as we won with a record final victory of 56 runs!

Well played to Ella Wood (Captain), Shreya Bhardwaj and Sophie Rowland ( Vice Captains), Lucy Wright, Megan Tooley, Elizabeth Kilminster, Nancy Odile, Tabitha Severs and Leoni Donachie. Once again, we were also well supported with wonderful family support in Chester-Le-Street, something which makes our school so special!

Thank you for your dedication girls, not just for this year but for the last three year’s where you have played some amazing cricket, and developed one of the best team spirits I’ve witnessed!

3rd January 2016B McVittie

On a glorious summer’s day, three teams of St. Bede’s cricketers took part in the annual District Girls Cricket Competition at the picturesque ground of Whitburn CC. The girls demonstrated fantastic communications skills as they ran between the wickets, while they all encouraged one another throughout every game. The uplifting team spirit and wonderful ability helped Ella Wood’s team overcome Mortimer in the final to become the District Champions! The girls will now represent our borough at the County Final at Chester-le-Street CC on Tuesday 21st of June. Well done to all of the girls who took part and who played with a smile throughout the day!
